2 1/2 year old in ballet or tap classes?

I want to enroll my two and a half year old daughter in some kind of class. I was thinking maybe a dance class. Some people say she may still be a little too young that the class may not hold her attention. Anyone have any experience with a child this age in ballet or tap?

What about gymnastics?

At 2 1/2 my daughter did Gymboree and she really liked it. When she turned three we enrolled her in a ballet class at our local community center. It was once a week for one hour and she loved it. She really got into it.

Is there a "Mom and Me" class near you? She may enjoy that. That's like gym/gymnastics, and it might interest her. That would introduce her to gymnastics, and it would be something you could do together!

Otherwise, I would say gymnastics. It lets them move all about, stretch, and kids seem to get into it.
Both of my children started tumbling at about 14 months old. They LOVE it. They also started music class at that age. Again, another love of theirs. I'm now trying to put my daughter (she'll be 3 in August) into a dance class for the summer but no place will take her until she turns 3. They say even those extra couple of months will do loads for her attention span. The dance class is 45 minutes. She's use to a 30 minute class. I can't say I blame them. 45 minutes is a long time if some of the kids check out after 30.
i would stick with the gymnastics until she is atleast in school.. they have gymnastics for kids this age and it is more of a fun activity that doesnt requre too much thinking but is still fun and challenging. Gymnastics will also help her when she moves on to dance classes!
My oldest girl started baby ballet at 2 .... she loved it ..... at the end she was nervous about recital but once we had the dress rehersal and she saw that she would be on stage she could not wait...... her dance teacher recommened baby ballet because she geared this class for that age and kept it down to 30 min with a break for them to get water and sit in a circle together..... mine loved it and is now taking 3 more classes ( she is 5 now) and can't wait for dance to resume in the fall
lots of children start dance at a very young age 2 1/2 is a perfect age to start dance , it gets them interacting and communicating with other children before starting school , which gives them a head start if they haven't been going to preschool , talking from experience here , I help teach dance every tuesday and we have children as young as 1 sometimes younger , each child is different they all take a different amount of time to adjust to a different environment and strange people , but what my dance school likes to do is if the children tend to be clingy then the parents will be invited to dance with the group and in time ask the praent to exit the room at different stages of the class so that eventually the child will be more than happy to go through the whole class without mummy or daddy in the room without them.
my daughter started gymnastics when she was 3 years old and she did fine. I say go for it you might try finding a class for both of you togther to see if she will like it
