Is this typical for a college ballet class?

We are asked to do crunches while everyone is arriving into class. Should someone really do this much crunches? I always thought you did some intense sets but not to overwork the muscle.

My real question is is this typical of a regular ballet class?

Yes, this is needed. In ballet all of your strength comes form your center, a.k.a. abdomen. Doing crunches strengthens this center and and will help you in areas of ballet, such as turns and such. When you do ballet you sometimes have to over work the muscle, because no one is a born dancer with all strengths. The crunches will help tone your muceles to help you later on.

Send me a pic and i can tell you if its typical
As a dance teacher I always incorporate abdominal exercises in my class as it is so important for your posture. It really helps have a strong center.
If you are getting into ballet, get used to overworking every muscle in your body! And yes, crunches are VERY important, to develop your center of balance. Not all ballet teachers use them, since they are not a part of a traditional ballet curriculum, but you can bet that all serious dancers do them ad nauseum.
it is typical to do a lot of ab work in ballet class. before you know it you'll have rock hard abs!
